Pilsner is a style of golden or light coloured, hoppy aromatic lager beer which originated in the Czech (then part of Austro-Hungary) town of Plzen (Pilsen) in 1842 after the use of transparent, glass drinking vessels became widespread. The style was quickly adopted by lager brewers generally as the golden yellow coloured beer appeared more appetising when served in a clear glass vessel than traditional brown or black coloured beers.
