ABOUKIR

HMS Aboukir was a British armoured cruiser of 12000 tons displacement. She was launched in May 1900 and sunk in the North Sea with the loss of 25 officers and 502 men, in September 1914 after being torpedoed by the German submarine U-9. HMS Aboukir was armed with two 9.2 inch, twelve six inch and twelve 12-pdr guns and two torpedo tubes and had a top speed of 21 knots.
The name Aboukir was first applied to the French 74-gun ship Aquilon, taken at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. British Ships-of-the-Line of the same name of 74 and 90 guns were launched in 1807 and 1848 respectively.
