ALGERIE

The Algerie was a French cruiser of 10000 tons displacement launched in 1932 and scuttled in shallow water at Toulon in late November 1942 before being salvaged after the Second World War. The Algerie was a new design of cruiser at the time, developed in response to the Italian Zara type cruisers and fitted with a new longer range 8-inch gun. The Algerie was powered by eight Indret boilers providing a top speed of 33 knots and a range of 8000 km at 15 knots. She carried a complement of 616 rising to 629 when operating as a flagship. Armaments consisted of eight 8-inch guns; twelve 3.9 inch anti-aircraft guns; eight 37 mm anti-aircraft guns; sixteen 13 mm anti-aircraft guns; six 21.7 inch torpedo tubes arranged in two triples and three aircraft were also carried.
