ASROC

The Honeywell ASROC (US Navy designation RUR-5A) is an American rocket-assisted anti-submarine ballistic weapon originally developed in 1956, production starting in 1959, with ASRCO becoming operational on four American destroyers in 1961 following successful evaluation trials on the destroyer USS Norfolk in 1960. ASROC consists of a General Electric Mk 44 Model 0 advanced acoustic homing torpedo or Honeywell Mk 46 torpedo connected to a rocket engine, which after firing homes on its target before sinking to a determined depth where the charge detonates with a large effective kill area. ASROC has a range of between 1.6 and 9 km.
