The Probert Encyclopaedia of Ships

ATAGO

The Atago was a Japanese Atago Class first class cruiser (Zyunyokan) of 9850 tons displacement launched in 1930. The Atago was designed with a triple hull for defence against submarine attacks and new model designed guns, and cost 2.2 million pounds to build. She was powered by twelve Kanpon oil-fired boilers providing a top speed of 33 knots and a range of 22400 km at 15 knots. She carried a complement of 692 and was armed with ten 8-inch guns; four 4.7-inch anti-aircraft guns; eight 47 mm anti-aircraft guns; eight machine-guns and eight 21-inch torpedo tubes.
