A caravel is a light, round, old-fashioned ship, with a square poop, galley-rigged, formerly used in Turkey, Spain and Portugal. The Portuguese caravel was a small vessel, about 23 meters long of about 60 tons displacement, carrying lateen sails and a crew of between 12 and 20. The three ships which composed the expedition of Columbus when he discovered America were modified Caravels (Caravel Redonda which were square rigged).
