DOW

The dow or dhow was an Arab vessel, generally from 150 to 250 tons, and about 85 feet long and 20 feet wide, and 11 feet deep. They were grab built, with ten or twelve ports, and designed for war. A single mast was raked forward supporting a heavy lateen sail which could be raised or lowered. During the 19th century dows were used to trade between Arabia and India, and also as pirate vessels in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf.
