MATTHEW

The Matthew was a Caravel of about 85 tons displacement and about 22 meters length with three masts; square rigged on the fore and main and lateen on the mizzen. The Matthew was built for John Cabot and sailed by him on his first voyage to the New World in 1497 from Bristol, reaching Newfoundland and tracing the east coast of Newfoundland. After Cabot's voyage the Matthew was used as a trading vessel sailing from Bristol to Ireland, France and Spain.
