PROVENCE

The Provence was a French battleship of 22189 tons displacement launched in 1913. The Provence was powered by Indret boilers providing a top speed of 21.4 knots and a range of 11200 km at 10 knots. She carried a complement of 1133, rising to 1190 when acting as flagship. Armaments consisted of ten 13.4 inch guns; fourteen 5.5 inch M10 guns; eight 3 inch anti-aircraft guns; seven 47 mm guns; sixteen 13 mm guns and originally torpedo tubes which were removed prior to the Second World War. The Provence was severely damaged by shelling at Mers-el-Kebir in July 1940.
