QUARTER-DECK

Originally a quarter-deck was a smaller deck situated above the half-deck, and covering about a quarter of the ship. The term became applied to that part of the upper or spar deck which extended between the stern and the aftermast of a large sailing ship and which was reserved for the sue of superior officers and cabin passengers.
