REPUBLICA

The Republica was a British-built Portuguese 2nd class sloop of 963 tons displacement launched in 1915 as the British ship HMS Gladiolus, one of the Azalea group of Flower Class sloops, and then sold to Portugal in 1920 and refitted between 1928 and 1930 for colonial service. The Republica was powered by two cylindrical boilers providing a top speed of 16 knots and a range of 8000 km at 15 knots. She carried a complement of 137 and was armed with two Vickers 4 inch guns; two Armstrong 3 inch anti-aircraft guns; four Hotchkiss 3 pdr guns and two machine-guns.
