The Probert Encyclopaedia of Ships

ROYAL GEORGE

The Royal George was a British first rate ship of the line of 100 guns launched in 1756. She had a displacement of 2041 tons and carried a crew of 850. Armaments consisted of twenty-eight 42-pounders, twenty-eight 24-pounders, twenty-eight 12-pounders and sixteen 6-pounders. She was lost in an accident at Spithead on the 29th of august 1782 while being heeled for the purposes of fitting a cock below the waterline when water entered through her gunports and she sank with the loss of 800 lives.
