A steamship is a vessel propelled by the power of steam. One of the earliest steamships was the Charlotte Dundas, built by Symington in Scotland between 1801 and 1802, and used on the Firth and Clyde canal. Another early steamship was the Clermont, constructed by Fulton in 1807m with engines built in England. The Clermont was a successful passenger vessel conveying passengers between New York and Albany. In 1812 steamships started to become common place, with the first trans-Atlantic steamship crossing taking place in 1819 by the Savannah which was fitted with both a steam engine and with sails.
