ALBANIA

Albania is a Balkan state between Greece and Yugoslavia. From the 4th century AD until 1347 Albania was part of the Byzantine empire, followed by decades of invasions and occupations by neighbouring peoples, in 1478 becoming part of the Ottoman Empire, later Turkey, retaining a certain degree of independence which the Turks never over came. In 1912 Albania became independent and declared itself a republic in 1925. In 1928 President Ahmed Beg Zogu proclaimed himself King Zog and Albania became a monarchy. Following Axis occupation during the Second World War, Albania became a communist republic in 1946 and in 1991 free, multiparty elections were held.
