AMMAN

Amman is the capital of Jordan. The city was first settled around 4000 BC. In the 3rd century BC Amman was conquered by Ptolemy II Philadelphus and renamed Philadelphia. By 1300 the original city had disappeared, only to be resettled as a village during the 1880s by Circassians from Russia. In 1921, when the British established the protected emirate of Transjordan the Emir Abdullah made Amman his capital and after Jordanian independence in 1946 the city grew rapidly.
