AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam (originally known as Amstelredam, meaning the dam or dyke of the Amstel) is the largest city in the Netherlands. Formerly a fishing village until 1200, Amsterdam was a town by 1585 and by the 19th century was the commercial and intellectual centre of the Netherlands. It stands on the river Amstel.
