ANGOLA

Angola is a republic in south-west Africa. It has a Total area of 1,246,700 km2. The climate is semiarid in the south and along the coast to Luanda; the north has cool, dry season from May to October and a hot, rainy season from November to April. The terrain is a narrow coastal plain which rises abruptly to a vast interior plateau. Natural resources are petroleum, diamonds, iron ore, phosphates, copper, feldspar, gold, bauxite and uranium. The religion is 47% indigenous beliefs, 38% Roman Catholic and 15% Protestant. The official language is Portuguese with various Bantu dialects. The country of Angola was first developed by Portugal in 1491 when they established a colony and slave trade in south-west Africa on land then occupied by the Kongo and Ndongo kingdoms. In 1956, an independence movement started which in 1961 led to civil war and independence from Portugal in 1975, though subsequently rival factions have continued to wage a civil war.
