Anguilla (Snake Island) is the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. It is 16 miles long, 3 miles wide, covering 35 square miles. It was named by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and first settled by the English in 1666. In 1980 Anguilla became a self-governing dependency.
