ATHELNEY

Athelney (recorded in the Domesday Book as Adelingi) is a village in Somerset, England. The village was formerly an island in the midst of fens and marshes, which by 1900 had been drained and cultivated. Alfred the Great took refuge at Athelney during a Danish invasion, and afterwards founded an abbey there.
