AZERBAIJAN

Azerbaijan is a republic in Asia. The religion is traditionally Shiite Muslim. The language is Turkic. Azerbaijan was formerly a province of Persia, then in the 19th century it was invaded by Russia, and made part of the Transcaucaian federation. In 1917 with Turkey's assistance Azerbaijan became independent until 1920 when it was occupied by the Bolshevik Red Army and was made part of the USSR in 1922. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union Azerbaijan became independent in 1991.
