The Probert Encyclopaedia of Places of the World

BASINGSTOKE

Basingstoke is a town 80 km south and west of London. It was originally a seconday settlement and farmland for the tribe at Basing led by Basa, and later a small market town (known as Basingastoc during the 10th century and recorded in the Domesday Book as Basingestoches), it developed an industry of light engineering in the middle of the 20th century. During the 1960s and 1970s
Basingstoke was expanded and finance industries moved in.
