BELIZE

Belize (formerly British Honduras) is a country in Central America south of Mexico and east of Guatemala. The terrain is mainly forest. The religion is about 60% Roman Catholic and 35% Protestant. The official language is English with Spanish widely spoken, and native Indian dialects.
Belize was once part of the Maya civilisation, and was colonised during the 17th century by English woodcutters from Jamaica, and became British Honduras, a name it kept until 1973. In 1964 Belize became self-governing and in 1981 became fully independent.
