BIRKENHEAD

Birkenhead is a seaport on the River Mersey opposite Liverpool, formerly famous for its ship-building. The Birkenhead Priory is Merseyside's oldest building, and was established in 1150 by Benedictine monks who operated the first ever ferry service across the Mersey.
