Bradford (recorded in the Domesday Book as Bradeford) is an industrial city in West Yorkshire in England. It is 14 km west of Leeds. In 1801 it was a country market town, by the mid 19th century It was an important wool and later cloth manufacturing centre but this has declined since the 1970s.
Bradford led the way in social reform, introducing public education, school meals, public baths and medical examinations. After the 1970s with the collapse of local industry, Bradford established the country's first Economic Development Unit to attract new investment and to launch the town and its district as a tourist destination, which it has done with remarkable success. Its large Asian population has provided one of Bradford' s most popular features, and the town makes much of its reputation for having the finest curry houses in the country.
