The Federative Republic of Brazil is the largest country in south America. It has a total area of 8,511, 965 km2. The climate is mostly tropical, but temperate in the south. The terrain is mostly flat to rolling lowlands in the north with some plains, hills, mountains, and a narrow coastal belt. Natural resources are iron ore, manganese, bauxite, nickel, uranium, phosphates, tin, hydropower, gold, platinum, crude oil and timber. The religion is 90% Roman Catholic. The official language is Portuguese with Spanish, English and French also spoken. Brazil was colonised by the Portugese in 1500 and named after the first natural commodity to be exported - brazilwood. In 1808 the French invaded Portugal, and the then Portugese king, John VI, moved his capital from Lisbon in Portugal to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. In 1809 John VI returned to Portugal leaving his son, crown prince Pedro in Brazil as regent. In 1822 Pedro assumed the title Emperor Pedro and declared Brazil independent. In 1899 Brazil formed a republic.
