BRIGHTON

Brighton (recorded in the Domesday Book as Brighthelmston) is a sea-side resort town in Sussex, England. It was formerly a village called called Brighthelmstone (though being commonly known as Brighton by 1834), and remained a village until the mid 18th century when a Lewes doctor, Richard Russell published a treatise advocating the benefits of sea-bathing, and, after the Prince of Wales built an occassional residence at Brighton in 1784, Brighton became a fashionable spa town. The Prince's seaside home, the 'Marine Pavilion' was built in 1784 and modified in 1786, then entirely remodelled in the Hindu style as a splendid palace at which he spent a large portion of each year until his royal duties and old age restricted him.
In 1834, 'Brookes's Gazetteer' described Brighton thus:
'Brightelmstone, commonly called Brighton, a town of England, in the county of Sussex, situated on a very abrupt and uninteresting part of the coast of the British channel, at the foot of a range of naked hills, without a tree either for shelter, or to diversify the scene. Having no accommodation for shipping beyond a fishing boat, and the coast here forming a sort of bay with shoal water, vessels passing up and down the channel keep too far out at sea ever to be visible from the shore; so that the view by sea and by land is equally monotonous, yet without any one natural feature or convenience to recommend it, from an insignificant fishing town, Brighton has become (chiefly in consequence of the patronage of his late majesty) one of the principal resorts of gaiety and fashion in the kingdom.'
