CLUNY

Cluny is a town in the Saone-et-Loire department of France on the River Grosne. It is rich in mediaeval architecture, specimens of which are to be found in its Benedictine abbey, the churches of Notre Dame and St Marcel and the old fortifications. The abbey was founded in 910 by William the Pious and by the 12th century had become the head of 314 houses.
