COSTA RICA

The Republic of Costa Rica is a republic in Central America. It has a total area of 51,100 km2. The climate is tropical with a dry season from December to April and a rainy season from May to November. The terrain is comprised of coastal plains separated by three rugged mountain ranges. Natural resources are the potential for hydropower. The religion is 95% Roman Catholic. The official language is Spanish with English spoken around Puerto Limon. Costa Rica was originally inhabited by the Guaymi people and was colonised by te Spanish during the late 16th century. In 1821 Costa Rica achieved independence from Spain. From 1824 until 1834 Costa Rica was part of the United Provinces of Central America, but in 1934 declared itself an independent republic.
