Cumberland is a former county of north west England. The county formed the extreme north-western county of England. Two ranges of lofty mountains occur in the region, one towards the north, to which belongs the ridge called Crossf ell (with a height of 881 meters); and the other to the south-west, of which the highest peak is Skiddaw (with a height of 932 meters). Other important summits of the region are Scaw Fell Pikes (978 meters), Scaw Fell (964 meters), Helvellyn (950 meters), and Bow Fell (902 meters). The two largest rivers of the area are the Eden and the Derwent. The county embraced part of the 'Lake District' of England. The largest lakes are Derwent-water, Bassenthwaite, Loweswater, Crummock, Buttermere, Ennerdale, Wastwater, Thirlmere, and part of Ullswater. The area is rich in minerals, including lead, gypsum, zinc, and especially coal and rich hematite iron-ore. The county town was Carlisle, now a city in the new county of Cumbria which encompasses the former county of Cumberland.
The Cumberland is a river of the United States which runs through Kentucky and Tennessee into the Ohio, having a course of about 960 km.
