The Probert Encyclopaedia of Places of the World

DACHAU

Dachau is a city in Bavaria and was the site of the first Nazi concentration camp during the Second World War, established in 1933. Dachau concentration camp was used to house political prisoners - those who opposed the Nazis, and during its existence more than 32000 prisoners died though malnutrition, disease, execution and unethical aviation medical experiments. After the war, some of the scientists and doctors from the camp were tried at Nurnberg with some other Nazi scientists and doctors from other concentartion camps in the 'Doctors' Trial'; seven were sentenced to death, others went to work in the USA, some continuing their research for the American air force.
