Daghestan is an autonomous republic in Asia on the west coast of the Caspian Sea and extending west to Georgia. The surface is mainly mountainous and slopes from west to east from the CaucasusMountains to a narrow coastal plain. The north is a comparatively arid steppe. Until 1991 Daghestan was an autonomous republic of the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic. The capital is Makhachkala and the country is rich in petroleum and natural gas reserves.
