DAHOMEY

Dahomey was the former name (from 1900 until 1975) of the French colony in west Africa that is now The Republic of Benin. The original country of Dahomey was a monarchy ruled by a king, and infamous for the savagery of its inhabitants who reputedly engaged in human sacrifices. The king used to keep up an army of 10,000, a number being female warriors. The capital of Dahomey was Abomey, and the chief port Whydah. In 1890 the king of Dahomey granted France a protectorate over the coast. A year or two after, hostilities broke out with the French, who defeated the king and made Dahomey a colonial possession.
