Doncaster (recorded in the Domesday Book as Donecastre) is a market town on the River Don in south Yorkshire. Situated on the old Roman Great North Road, the Romans built a fort at Doncaster called Danum. The town became an important trading centre during the Middle Ages and major coaching point in the 18th century. Annual races have been held at Doncaster since 1703, with the town hosting the St Leger, Britain's oldest classic horse race. Research Doncaster
