ELGIN

Elgin is a royal borough and market town in Moray, Scotland. Elgin has been an important administrative and commercial centre since the 14th century. The original castle was demolished in the 16th century and only the impressive remains of the cathedral still stand. The cathedral was first built in the 1220s, was burnt by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390, and then rebuilt, only to crumble during the post-Reformation period, when it was used as a quarry by local builders. It had replaced the cathedral at Spynie in 1224, though the bishops continued to live in Spynie Palace until after the Reformation.
