The Probert Encyclopaedia of Places of the World

ENTEBBE

Entebbe is a town in Uganda. Scene of a famous hijacking when Palestinian terrorists - with the assistance of Idi Amin's Ugandan forces - hijcked an Air France jet carrying Jewish, mainly Israeli, civilians. Israeli commandos flew in secret within three Hercules transport planes and rescued the hostages, receiving one casualty, the leader of the commandos, to Ugandan military fire from a control tower. One hostage died, an elderly lady who had been taken to hospital was the next day shot by Ugandan President Idi Amin. The controller of air traffic control was also arrested by Idi Amin, and tortured, but escaped from prison.
