Fallujah (Falluja or Fallouja) is a city on the River Euphrates in central Iraq. A city of over 200 mosques it is a holy shrine in the religion of Sunni Islam. During the American-led invasion of Iraq, Falluja was, in 2004 besieged, bombarded with conventional and chemical (white phosphorus) weapons and almost totally destroyed with hospitals being actively targeted by the US troops, resulting in over 1000 civilians slaughtered by the American forces. The outrage felt by Muslims around the world was a major contributory factor in the subsequent bomb attacks against mainly British and American civilians around the world which included the London bus and underground train bombs of July 2005.
