Falmouth is a seaport and the largest town in Cornwall. It was only a tiny village until the 17th century, but the deep-water natural harbour of Carrick Roads made it one of the largest trading ports in the country during the 18th century The arrival of the railway in 1863 made the town a resort, with tourists flocking to the beaches on its southern side.
