Georgetown (formerly also known as Demerera) is a port and the capital city of Guyana. Georgetown is situated at the mouth of the Demerara river.
Georgetown is a port of entry in the United States, in the district of Columbia, on the left bank of the Potomac, two miles west of Washington (hence it has been called West Washington since the 19th century), with which it was incorporated in 1878. It contains the Georgetown college (the oldest Roman Catholic college in the United States), the Peabody Library, etc. It is at the head of the Potomacnavigation, and at the commencement of the Chesapeake and Ohiocanal.
