Germany is a country in west-central Europe. Germany became a unified nation in 1871, prior to then it had been a confederacy from 1815 to 1867 and before 1806 a federal empire composed of separate principalities. In 1949, following the Second World War the country was divided into two, being reunified in 1990. The climate is temperate with cloudy, cold winters with frequent rain and snow and cool, wet summers. The terrain is comprised of lowlands in the north, uplands in the centre, Bavarian Alps in the south. The east of the country is mostly flat plains with hills. Natural resources are lignite, potash, uranium, copper, natural gas, salt, nickel, iron ore, coal, potash, timber. The religion is 47% Protestant, 7% Roman Catholic, 46% unaffiliated or other. The language spoken is German.

Large numbers of Germans emigrated to America during the 17th century, with more arriving in Pennsylvania than in any other of the colonies. Penn encouraged their immigration, and they were largely of sects persecuted in Germany. They were averse to war and indifferent to politics, but had important influence on the development of manufactures. Palatine, Moravian and other Germans were also settled in large numbers in Maryland, New York, Virginia and the Carolinas, and Salzburgers in Georgia. The revolutionary movements in germany of 1848 caused the emigration of large numbers to the United States.
