Guantanamo Bay is a bay of southern Cuba. It is one of the world's largest and best-sheltered natural harbours about 6 km wide and 19 km long capabale of accomodating large vessels. Guantanamo Bay hosts a US naval base, airfields and notorious military prisons. The US base at Guantanamo Bay was established under a treaty in 1903. In 2002 Guantanamo Bay came to prominence when civilians from various countries were seized during the American invasion of Afghanistan and imprisoned at the US base. Here they were held without charge, deprived legal representation and tortured, despite repeated calls to the US government to close the prison camp, by the United Nations, International Red Cross and European Union, all of which described the activities carried out there as illegal under international law.
