GUYANA

The Cooperative Republic of Guyana is a republic in South America. It has a total area of 214,970 km2. The climate is tropical; hot, humid, moderated by north-east trade winds; two rainy seasons from May to mid-August and another from mid-November to mid-January. The terrain is mostly rolling highlands; low coastal plain; savannah in south. Natural resources are bauxite, gold, diamonds, hardwood timber, shrimp, fish. The religion is 57% Christian, 33% Hindu, 9% Muslim, 1% other. The languages spoken are English, Hindi, urdu, Creole and native Amerindian languages. Guyana was settled as a Dutch colony in 1620, before being seized by the British in 1796 and in 1831 was merged with Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo to form 'British Guiana'. British Guiana became independent in 1966 and changed its name to Guyana.
