HASTINGS

Hastings (recorded in the Bayeaux tapestry as Hestenga-Cceastra and recorded in the Domesday Book as Hastinges) is a coastal town in Sussex, England. William the Conqueror invaded England at Hastings in 1066 where he defeated King Harold 2nd. The town originated from a Roman settlement and became an important Saxon tarding and ship-building center. Hastings was head of the cinque ports until the sea destroyed its harbour and the town then declined until it developed as a seaside resort from the middle of the 18th century after being recommended by doctor Baillie as a place for invalids.
