Heligoland (Helgoland) is a small island in the North Sea, off the coast of Germany. Originally the home of Frisian seamen, it was Danish from 1714 until it was seized by the British Navy in 1807 and later ceded officially to Britain. In 1890 it was given to Germany in exchange for Zanzibar and Pemba, and was made into an important German naval base in both World Wars. Its naval installations were demolished in 1947, and it was returned to Germany in 1952. Research Heligoland
