HONDURAS

The Republic of Honduras is a republic in Central America. It has a total area of 112,090 km2. The climate is subtropical in lowlands, temperate in mountains. The terrain is mostly mountains in interior, narrow coastal plains. Natural resources are timber, gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron ore, antimony, coal, and fish. The religion is about 97% Roman Catholic with a small Protestant minority. The language is Spanish, with English and Indian dialects also spoken.
Honduras was part of the Maya civilisation, until it was colonised from 1562 onwards by the Spanish. Honduras gained independence from Spain in 1821, becoming part of the United Provinces of Central America, leaving the United provinces in 1839 and declaring itself independent in 1840.
