HONG KONG

Hong Kong is an island off the south-east coast of China at the mouth of the estuary that leads to Canton. It has a total area of 1,040 km2. The climate is tropical monsoon; cool and humid in winter, hot and rainy from spring through summer, warm and sunny in autumn. The The island of Hong Kong consists almost entirely of barren rocks, which rise to heights of 1000 to 2000 feet. Good water is abundant, and much vegetation was provided artificially during the 19th century. Although devoid of any natural resources, Hong Kong became prosperous from the foreign commerce of China, the revenue being derived from licenses to sell opium and spirits; land sales, rates, taxes, etc, during the 19th century. The religion is comprised of a 90% eclectic mixture of local religions, 10% Christian. The spoken languages are Chinese (Cantonese) and English.
