HUNGARY

The Republic of Hungary is a republic in central Europe. It has a total area of 93,030 km2. The climate is temperate; cold, cloudy, with humid winters and warm summers. The terrain is mostly flat to rolling plains. Natural resources are bauxite, coal, natural gas and fertile soils. The religion is 67.5% Roman Catholic, 20.0% Calvinist, 5.0% Lutheran, and 7.5% atheist and others. The language is 98.2% Magyar (Hungarian) and1.8% other. The country of Hungary can be traced back to the 9th century when the Magyars established a dynasty in the country under the chieftan Arpad. In 1001 the first Hungarian king, Stephen, established a kingdom. Through the ages part of Hungary was taken by the Ottoman Empire and by the 17th century Hungary was part of the Austrian Empire. In 1945, following the Second World War, Hungary became an independent Communist republic, controlled by the USSR. In 1956 a national uprising against Communism was put down by a Soviet invasion. In 1990 the Communist regime was replaced, but the country remained a republic.
