INDIANA

Indiana is a state in midwest USA, often called the Hoosier State. Indiana was formed from the Northwest Territory. The first settlement was made at Vincennes in 1702, by the French. This place was captured by Clark during the American War of Independence. After the erection of Ohio as a separate Territory, the Northwest was called Indiana, with Vincennes its capital. In 1805 and 1809, the Territories of Michigan and Illinois were organized as separate Territories. On November the 7th, 1811, General Harrison defeated the Indians at Tippecanoe. On December the 11th, 1816, Indiana became a State. Slavery was. forbidden by the Ordinance of 1787, by which the Northwest was organized.
