ITALY

Italy or more properly the Italian republic, is a country in south Europe. It has a total area of 301,230 km2. The climate is predominantly Mediterranean; Alpine in the far north; hot and dry in The south. The terrain is mostly rugged and mountainous with some plains and coastal lowlands. Natural resources are mercury, potash, marble, sulphur, dwindling natural gas and crude oil reserves, fish, coal. The religion is almost all nominally Roman Catholic. The language is Italian including Neapolita, Sicillian and Sardinian varieties; parts of Trentino-Alto Adige region are predominantly German speaking and there is a significant French-speaking minority in Valle d' Aosta region. There is also a Slovene-speaking minority in the Trieste-Gorizia area. Priot ro 1798 Italy was a collection of city-states and dukedoms. These were briefly united under French rule from 1796 to 1814 before being split once more until in 1861 following a referendum a united kingdom of Italy was formed. The monarchy was abolished in 1946 and Italy became
a republic.
