IWO JIMA

Iwo Jima is a small volcanic island, the largest of the Volcano Islands in the western Pacific, 1, 222 km south of Tokyo. During the Second World War it was the heavily fortified site of a Japanese air base, and its attack and capture in 1944 to 1945 was one of the severest American campaigns.
