Kentucky is a state in south central USA. Kentucky was originally a part of Virginia. The first settlements were made by James Harrod and others at Harrodsburg in 1774; and by Daniel Boone at Boonesborough in 1775. A land company in 1775 attempted to organize a separate government under the name of Transylvania. In 1776 Kentucky became Kentucky County of Virginia. The refusal of Virginia and the National Government to allow a separate government and the indignation over the provision concerning the navigation of the Mississippi led to efforts being made to form an independent republic with alliance with Spain or Canada. On June the 1st, 1792, the State was admitted into the Union. The close union of political feeling with Virginia was shown by the passage of the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions of 1798 and 1799, which protested against the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts by the Federalists. During the American Civil War Kentucky declared itself strictly neutral. However, it was invaded by Confederate forces in August 1861 and as a result of failed attempts to persuade them to leave Kentucky aligned with the Union in the conflict.
